Two faces of Mark Warburton

Thirteen months ago Mark Warburton was telling Alan Stubbs off for highlighting the fact that the former city trader had the highest playing budget in the Championship.

That didn’t prevent Sevco from losing four out of four on the road at Falkirk and Hibs and also the Scottish Cup Final to the Edinburgh side.

Talking about the budget of another club was disrespectful in November 2015 but fair game for a desperate manager 13 months later.

Despite having a budget much higher than Aberdeen and Hearts Warbo managed to lose against both teams.

St Johnstone and Ross County weren’t in the bidding war for Philippe Senderos or Joe Garner but Warbo has yet to record a win in four matches against those cash strapped sides.

After losing 2-1 to Hibs in November the former city trader didn’t take kindly to Stubbs explaining that due to their spending power the club from Ibrox were where he’d expect them to be- at the top of the table.

Biting back Warbo told the Daily Mail: “Number one, I’m not sure where they’re finding their information from, again they are just picking numbers out of the sky

Number two, I heard previously managing Rangers was a really easy job. That’s what I was told earlier.

In that respect, I think it’s really important you talk about your own club — that’s not being rude.

I’ll be answering questions about Rangers. I wouldn’t for the life of me talk about another football club for the wrong reasons.”

Fast forward 13 months and it seems that Warbo has rudely decided to talk about Celtic’s wage structure- no doubt picking numbers out of the sky.

Rather than discuss his own failings against clubs with smaller budgets Warbo elected to highlight Celtic’s financial advantages saying: “If you looked at wage structures I’m sure you’d be staggered at the disparity.

I can’t control Celtic and the Champions League money coming in. I can only focus on Rangers and how we are going to close the gap.

We’re not going to close it between now and the end of the season. We’re not going to spend £40million in January. That’s not going to happen.

I keep hearing we are behind. But we can’t compete anywhere near with the wages currently being paid, or fees being paid, at Celtic.”
