The British ambassador to Turkey has apologised to Besiktas over Craig Thomson’s display in their 6-0 defeat from Dinamo Kiev!

The Scottish referee had a nightmare performance with the entire match turning on a 29th minute red card for Besiktas defender Andreas Beck.

Thomson’s decision to award a penalty seemed very harsh with the red card met with shock by both sets of players.

Having arrived in Kiev looking for a draw to progress to the last 16 of the Champions League the Turks suddenly found themselves trailing 2-0, down to ten men and under the influence of an erratic refereeing team.

Thomson’s display has kicked up a storm in Turkey forcing the UK ambassador to distance himself from the referee.

According to the Daily Record UK Ambassador Richard Moore said: “I do not usually complain about referees but tonight … and a UK citizen too!”

After the game Besiktas boss Senol Gunes said: “The referee had a nightmare but I don’t want to say anything else that will get me into trouble. You all saw it.”

Thomson has had a difficult season domestically and is due in front of the BT Sport cameras tomorrow for the Partick Thiste v Celtic match.
