Gary Caldwell has been appointed the new manager of Chesterfield.
The League One strugglers parted company with Danny Wilson on January 8 and moved quickly for Caldwell who led Wigan to promotion to the Championship last season.
Caldwell’s former Celtic boss Tony Mowbray was among the other leading candidates for the job in charge of the side third from the bottom of League One but only trailing Shrewsbury and Bury on goal difference.
On Saturday Caldwell watched Chesterfield win 1-0 at home to second bottom Coventry and will take charge for the first time on Saturday against AFC Wimbledon.
After being appointed Caldwell said: “I would not be here if I didn’t believe the club could get out of the situation we are in now and look to achieve more success next season.
“I think I’m a better manager now for my 18 months at Wigan and I have had experiences that have made me a better manager.”
Caldwell replaced Malky Mackay as Wigan manager in April 2015 but was unable to prevent them from being relegated to League One.
After guiding them to immediate promotion he was sacked at the end of October. Last season Wigan won the League One title with 87 points, two more than second placed Burton Albion.
