Five disastrous January signings

Checking through the archives Celtic actually have a very decent record in the January transfer window in terms of signing players. There has been been a few January windows that have closed too quietly for many supporters but over the piece there hasn't been too many disastrous January signings. January 2010 was one of the busiest for the club, among the many arrivals were Jos Hooiveld and Morten Rasmussen, with Tony Mowbray sacked before the end of the season. Many managers tend to be cautious at this time of the year with question marks raised about the quality of player available in January. Brendan Rodgers hasn't wasted any time in dipping into the market with Kouassi Eboue arriving in Glasgow in the first few days of the month. At least one more signing is expected as the Irishman increasingly stamps his authority on the club, changing the culture and putting the Ronny Deila legacy to rest. As he ponders his next transfer deal it's almost certain that whoever he brings in won't be joining the list below. COLIN KAZIM-RICHARDS Very much one from left field as Ronny Deila decided to switch his emphasis from projects to experience. Richards made his debut in a 2-1 defeat at Pittodrie that could have ended in a red card. It never really got much better with the Turkish internationalist forever bracketed with Carlton Cole as Deila's most mysterious signings. Fortunately he moved on to Brazil rather than hanging onto his contract. JOS HOOIVELD Was expected to bring Johan Mjallby like stability to Tony Mowbray's defence but it never quite worked out. An injury on Robbie Keane's debut away to Kilmarnock put him out of action for three months, by the time he had recovered fitness Mowbray had been replaced by Neil Lennon. A move to Southampton led to Premier League football after helping the Saints to promotion with Celtic picking up a bonus to cover the original fee. His career continued to hurdle around from club to club with Celtic the smallest chapter. MORTEN RASMUSSEN Made an instant impact scoring the only goal of the game as a substitute away to Hamilton Accies. The signing of Robbie Keane virtually ended his Celtic hopes although he did come up with a valuable winner against Hibs that delayed an Ibrox title party. When Neil Lennon got the job on a full time basis Gary Hooper and Anthony Stokes were brought in with Rasmussen sent on loan to Germany and Turkey before a low key return to Denmark WILLO FLOOD The final signing of the Gordon Strachan regime with supporters shocked by the lack of transfer activity. Having qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League more was expected but week by week the title drifted away before two goal-less draws against Hibs and Hearts killed off hopes of four-in-a-row. Flood made his debut replacing Aiden McGeady against Rangers (IL) in a 0-0 draw and was on his way to rejoin Strachan at Middlesbrough a year after joining Celtic. STEPHANE HENCHOZ All seemed well when Martin O'Neill brought in the experienced defender on a short term loan from Liverpool. Unfortunately the team was on a serious decline with Henchoz rarely used and failing to make an impression. The ending of the 2004/05 SPL season doesn't need repeating with Henchoz quietly slipping back down the M74 to Liverpool.
