Brendan Rodgers has revealed that Celtic have a one year option that they can add on to Craig Gordon’s contract.

Gordon signed a two year contract in July 2014 after being out of the game for three seasons then signed a two year extension after an outstanding first season at the club.

It had been widely reported that Gordon was out of contract this summer but all of the quotes from his 2015 contract extension point to his contract running until 2018, suggesting that the club had an extension added to his initial deal.

Yesterday there was extensive speculation suggesting that Chelsea were interested in the Celtic keeper as a back-up should Asmir Begovic move to Bournemouth.

A 34-year-old with six months left on their deal is an entirely different prospect to one with 18 months remaining as Brendan Rodgers explained.

Asked about the possibility of Gordon moving to Chelsea the Celtic boss said: “Would Chelsea be wasting their time? Yes, of course. If it is the case they are interested, we don’t want to sell him.

His contract is up at the end of the season but the club have an option. It’s not something we would even consider. Craig is someone I want to lock down for during my time here.

He’s a good guy, he’s very happy in his life and he’s enjoying playing this style of football.

It’s given him a real edge to his game. So much so if a club like Chelsea are interested it shows the level he is at. I’m delighted for him, he’s stuck at it and performed really well.”

Gordon kept a clean sheet last night as Celtic beat St Johnstone 1-0 to match the Lisbon Lions record of starting the season with 26 unbeaten domestic results.
