Craig Gordon- stick or twist

The Craig Gordon transfer triangle looks like dominating the last few days of the transfer window.

Chelsea seem to have agreed a deal to sell Asmir Begovic to Bournemouth but have one vital component to secure- a reliable replacement for the outgoing keeper.

Antonio Conte has a few options in mind with a bid for Gordon already rejected by Brendan Rodgers.

There are a number of factors involved in the possible sale of the former Sunderland keeper- some financial and some footballing.

After two years out of the game through injury Gordon signed a three year contract in July 2014. There was a risk for Celtic regarding the player’s injury record with Gordon accepting a deal that was almost certainly inferior to the package he had enjoyed at Sunderland.

Whether Gordon was grateful to be given a chance to play again or resentful at the cut in salary is unknown but last year a two year contract extension was signed that would have put Gordon’s salary in line with other senior players at the club.

His original contract runs until this summer but as far as Brendan Rodgers is concerned the club have activated the clause keeping him at Celtic for another year.

Forcing reluctant players onto new deals isn’t wise but you get the feeling that Rodgers negotiates deals with the players interest in mind rather than the club. He works on the training ground with players rather than balance sheets.

Another new contract for Gordon would seem an obvious solution but there could be reluctance on the part of Rodgers to commit himself to a keeper that he dropped earlier in the season.

The net few days will be full of intrigue- have your say and vote in the poll above.
