Three days after a fans demo demanding his removal Mark McGhee has left Motherwell.

A disastrous run of results since the new year and some high profile run-ins with match officials forced Motherwell to take action.

In his last match in charge Motherwell lost 5-1 at home to Dundee, a result that sent them down to third bottom place.

This morning the club announced: “The decision, taken by the Board following consultation with the ‘Well Society, comes after a disappointing run of results, culminating in Saturday’s loss at home to Dundee.

“Stephen Robinson, flanked by assistant James McFadden and Under 20s boss Stephen Craigan, has agreed to take temporary charge whilst a new permanent manager is recruited as swiftly as possible.

“The club wishes to thank Mark for his work during his second spell at Fir Park, particularly getting the club into the top-six during the 2015/16 season and wish him every success in the future.”

McGhee returned to Motherwell early last season and took them into the top six.

It was expected that Motherwell would stick with the Scotland assistant manager through until the end of the season but the return of Robinson after a spell at Oldham seemed like an insurance policy.

On Saturday Motherwell travel to Kilmarnock who are four points ahead of the Lanarkshire side in the SPFL table.

McGhee will still have to answer an SFA Notice of Complaint following an incident with a fourth official during the 7-2 defeat away to Aberdeen.
