Joey Barton won’t take any blame for Sevco’s complete failure to challenge Celtic for the SPFL title.

Mark Warburton’s marquee signing was brought on board to launch #goingfor55 but quit after a handful of appearances and a training ground bust up with the former city trader.

After a lengthy club suspension on full pay the 34-year-old reached an agreement to get his contract paid off before joining Burnley where his career has taken off.

While he still waits for his contract to be paid up Barton won’t go into any detail about his Ibrox departure but typically he isn’t backing down or apologising over the incident that ended his days at Ibrox.

I was trying to win at Rangers,” the Burnley ace told TalkSPORT: “I went in there with the ability, knowledge and expertise on how to win – but it didn’t work out.

That wasn’t through any lack of desire or determination on my part. I look myself in the mirror in the morning and know I did everything I could possibly do to achieve those goals but ultimately I’m a footballer, I have a contract of employment and maybe the way I go about things isn’t entirely in everybody’s fashion. I can’t and won’t apologise for that.

The facts of the matter are that Rangers are 27 points behind Celtic. Things can always work out differently but that’s nothing to do with me.”

After being dumped out of the Sevco team Barton suffered the ultimate humiliation of having his place taken by Andy Halliday.

In his final appearance in a blue jersey Barton suffered a 5-1 defeat to Celtic having gone into the match slagging off Brendan Rodgers and Scott Brown.
