A second half penalty from Ryan Bownan earned Motherwell a 1-0 win over Celtic in the Development League at Airdrie tonight.

After a recent 3-2 win for Celtic over the Fir Parkers and ahead of their SFA Youth Cup semi-final the two sides found themselves again in opposition.

Mark Hill, Josh Kerr and Aidan McIlduff were missing from the side that beat Dundee last week while half a dozen players, including Jack Aitchison and Kerr McIlroy were away on international duty.

Like last weeks match with Dundee there was little between the sides during the first half but thankfully there were a few chances, mainly for Celtic.

In the 20th minute Mikey Johnston showed great control to tame a pass from Theo Archibald but his first time shot struck the base of the post.

A couple of minutes later Conor Hazard had to be alert, spreading himself well to block a close range shot from Frear after the Celtic defence was opened up.

Celtic had a couple of near things around the Motherwell goal but had to settle for 0-0 at the break.

Eleven minutes into the second half Motherwell took the lead when Ryan Bowman scored from the penalty spot after a needless trip by Calvin Miller just inside the box.

Celtic stepped up the pressure after going behind but were unable to get players in and around PJ Crossan as he toiled to find space in the penalty box.

Substitute Kerr forced a good save out of the ‘Well keeper in the 72nd minute with Ciaran Diver sent on for Regan Hendry five minutes later.
