Ronny Deila has revealed that he’d have stepped down as Celtic manager even if they had beaten Sevco in last season’s Scottish Cup semi-final.

It was a brutal performance from the hoops but even so apart from the first 30 minutes they dominated the tribute act throughout the remainder of the match.

With confidence fragile it was no surprise that Celtic lost out on penalties with Deila announcing his departure three days later.

The Norwegian stayed on to clinch the title but there were few tears shed when he signed off with a 7-0 home win over Motherwell.

This wasn’t a Ronny Deila team that went out that day and I was responsible for that,” Deila told the Evening Times. “That is why we decided that enough is enough.

We played so bad, there was no energy in the team, nothing.

That night I understood that if this club was going to go forward and if this team was going to get the best out of itself then I had to do something. I wasn’t having fun, because I wasn’t improving anything any more. We were standing still, or maybe moving backwards.

That was when I talked with Peter and we agreed that this was over.

“We could have won the game but for me that wouldn’t have helped everything. We would never have gone in like that, just one year before. We used to play with so much intensity. And that is also what I like when I see this current Celtic team, I see energy, happy people and players. I see a group that stays together and that is the kind of football I love.”

Deila won two SPFL title for Celtic but his time in charge will mainly be remembered for two failures in the Champions League qualifiers.

Losing out to Maribor and Malmo in each season cast a shadow over the season that Deila was never really to recover from although the hoops did qualify from their Europa League group in 2014 they failed to win a match in their 2015 Europa League campaign, highlighted by home and away defeats from Molde.
