Stuart Armstrong believes that Chris Martin’s last gasp winner against Slovenia can kick-start Scotland’s World Cup bid.

It looked ominous for Gordon Strachan with two minutes left to play but the Suffolk born striker turned the boos into cheers as he struck a late winner.

Scotland’s next match is against England on June 10 with the extended fixture list running into Celtic’s build up to the all important Champions League qualifiers.

Strachan’s side are sitting in fourth place with seven points from five matches, two behind second placed Slovakia.

One of the nine group runners-up will miss out on a play-off place but after the relief of Martin’s goal Armstrong is bursting with hope.

I think it can be a turning point, I think it gives us a lot of confidence going into the next game,” he told The Sun. “We’re back up there now, we have a lot of positives to take.

I thought we controlled the game in a very good overall team performance. So I think we have a lot to be happy and positive about going into the next game.

We started off really well as a team and got better as the game went on. We had a couple of chances and we didn’t take them.

And sometimes when you don’t take them at this level it costs you in the end.

But we kept fighting. It was a great team performance and a great win, which I think we deserved.

We always knew we could do it and throughout the game we showed we are a good team. The win was merited in the end.”

Last night was Armstrong’s international debut as he made the starting line-up alongside five Celtic team-mates including Kieran Tierney playing at right-back.

Leigh Griffiths took a back knock and failed to reappear for the second half but will hopefully be fit for Sunday’s trip to Tynecastle.

Group F alongside Group E are shaping up as the groups that look the most likely not to provide a runner-up for the play-off’s.
