Maurice Johnston believes that the solution to Sevco’s cash crisis could be found in China!
The former striker enjoyed the good days at Ibrox when Dave Murray had unlimited access to cash thanks to his friend Gavin Masterton at Bank of Scotland.
No expense was spared in their attempts to win the big cup but clubs like Red Star Belgrade, Slavia Prague and Bayern Munich prevented Johnston from getting close to European success.
These days the tribute act are with Masterton and have to pay HMRC like everyone else with income tax and national insurance deducted from the wages paid to players.
It’s a reality that Johnston could never have imagined as he shared a dressing room with stars like Ally McCoist, Ian Ferguson and John Brown.
“Maybe Rangers need a different owner,” the chunky former striker told the Evening Times. “Perhaps that’s what has to happen.
“I don’t know much about the takeover which was in the papers on Monday. However, what I would say is if the owner injects money into the club then things would be better.
“I don’t know King’s finances, but if he puts more money in then things might improve but I don’t think he’s going to do that.
“If this is the case then, probably, they would need someone else to come in and invest their money.
“There aren’t a lot of people out there who would be able to do that. For me, it would have to be someone from China.”
With soft loans totalling £17m, stadium repairs estimated at over £10m and a squad that didn’t attract a single bid during the January transfer window it’s going to take an awful lot of money to buy out existing shareholders and go about rescuing Charles Green’s tribute act.
