Sevco are set to appeal against Rob Kiernan’s red card against St Johnstone in order to let the defender play against Celtic next Sunday.

The former Yeovil ace was given a straight red card by Kevin Clancy for a dangerous lunge at Graeme Cummins which was similar to the recent yellow card issued by Willie Collum in a game away to Motherwell.

Because it was a red card for violent conduct Kiernan is due to miss Saturday’s Scottish Cup tie against Hamilton Accies- and the next SPFL fixture, away to Celtic.

The appeal won’t be heard until next week with caretaker manager Graeme Murty virtually admitting that the appeal is simply a stalling tactic to get the defender available for Saturday.

“We will have to put some more meat on the bones of the appeal when we go to the board but I think it is definitely worth an appeal,” Murts admitted in the Evening Times.

“As it stands he would miss this Saturday and next Sunday. If we appeal, it would be heard next week, so Rob would be eligible for Saturday.”

Earlier this year Kiernan successfully appealed against a retrospective two match ban after he was caught on camera punching St Johnstone’s Steven Anderson.

On that occasion the appeal panel decided the charge was not proven.

If Kiernan’s appeal is unsuccessful Pip Senderos is likely to replace him in Murty’s side to face Hamilton and Celtic.
