Celtic were denied a late penalty in today’s Glasgow derby when Clint Hill chopped Leigh Griffiths as he prepared to shoot from 12 yards with minutes left to play.

With the score tied at 1-1 Griffiths managed to pull away from Hill’s attention to shape up for a shot at goal.

With no prospect of clean contact the 38-year-old defender made a desperate lunge at Griffiths chest preventing the striker from making clean contact with the ball.

Despite having a clear view of the incident Madden refused to award a penalty with the match finishing on level terms.

After the match Leigh Griffiths revealed that Madden asked him if Hill had made contact with the ball.

Brendan Rodgers said that Hill told him after the match that he had got away with one.

Madden was refereeing his first Glasgow derby fixture having risen through the ranks from the highly rated Lanarkshire Referee Association.
