Loan Celts

What’s happening with the loan bhoys?

When he took over from Ronny Deila in the summer one of the first things that Brendan Rodgers had to address was the bloated first team squad that he inherited.

Half a dozen players quickly departed, including Charlie Mulgrew and Anthony Stokes, as the Irishman assessed and revived the squad with minimal transfer activity.

Moving players on is never an easy task with a number of players sitting with a couple of seasons left on their contract with little prospect of first team action.

It’s generally accepted that it takes a manager four transfer windows to fully put his stamp on the squad with the loan market the easiest way to move players on.

While Jamie McCart and Kristoffer Ajer are getting priceless experience in the Premiership other loan players are struggling to make an impact and highly unlikely to barge their way back into Rodgers’ plans.

With an international break upon us I’ve raked through the web to find out what has been going on with the loan bhoys, Efe Ambrose seems to be enjoying himself at Hibs with Neil Lennon but elsewhere there’s not much to laugh about.

NADIR CIFTCI

It’s not being going well for the striker who moved to Pogon Szczecin after the UK transfer window had closed and a near miss with Motherwell.

So far Ciftci has started two matches and came on twice as a substitute playing a total of 166 minutes for the Polish side- without scoring.

On Saturday he got 11 minutes coming off the bench at home to Jagiellonia Bialystok with Pogon slipping into the bottom half of the table ahead of the split.

LEO FASAN

He’s certainly learning about the sometimes grim realities of the game but eight appearances so far for Port Vale have provided priceless experience.

Unlike playing for Celtic he is in at the thick of the action with Vale sitting third bottom of League One.

After the defeat at Northampton last Tuesday he dropped to the bench for Friday’s win over Shrewsbury and will be hoping to win back his place in the side.

EOGHAN O’CONNELL

Was thrown in at the deep end with Walsall but made an instant impression, starting in 13 matches until he suffered a broken nose and hamstring injury in the 1-0 home defeat from Fleetwood.

His hamstring injury looks like keeping him out of action for three weeks which is a lot of matches down in League One.

With his contract up up at the end of May big decisions will be made with Celtic due a compensation fee if he moves on elsewhere.

SCOTT ALLAN

Working with Alan Stubbs should have given the midfielder a boost but three managers and a 17 point deficit to second bottom Wigan tells it’s own story.

Allan returned to Celtic in December to recover from injury but hasn’t featured for Rotherham since the end of January.

With match time limited he could be heading back up the road with little expectation of having advanced his prospects on getting a game at Celtic.

SAIDY JANKO

Hasn’t played since making a substitute appearance in the defeat away to Sheffield Wednesday in December.

An injury early on in his Barnsley career never helped his case but seven substitute appearances in the Championship hasn’t advanced his career.

Barnsley sold first choice right-back James Bree to Aston Villa in January but that hasn’t opened any doors for Janko.

Like Nadir Ciftci, Logan Bailly and Scott Allan the summer signings of 2015 have failed to make an impact on the Celtic.
