Five young Celts can look forward to the u17 European Championships in Croatia.

A 1-0 win over Switzerland yesterday ensured that Stephen Welsh, Robbie Deas, Dan Church, Kerr McInroy will be mixing it with 15 of the best teams in Europe in May.

Aitchison captained Scotland and led by example through three victories over Macedonia, Serbia and the Swiss with Norwich’s Glenn Middleton scoring the only goal of the game against Switzerland and Serbia.

While Middleton and Aitchison capture the headlines the backbone of Scot Gemmil’s side is in a defence built around Welsh, Deas and Church.

Central defence isn’t always about the two best players, it does usually help, but the key to success is the partnership. In Deas and Welsh Celtic have got two great prospects with an understanding of their role and each others way of playing.

On their left Church had an outstanding game against Macedonia playing a big part in the 6-1 win with a contribution to most goals.

McInroy was on the score-sheet in that match as he was back in September when Scotland beat Portugal 1-0 in the initial Qualifying Round.

In six qualification matches Scotland have lost just one goal with the win over Portugal being the most significant as they head to the finals in Croatia.
