The chances of Ovidiu Popescu joining Celtic look to have lengthened after Steuau Bucharest owner George Becali went public about interest in the midfielder.
If there’s one sign that is sure to put Celtic off a deal it’s when a club or agent go public with their interest.
Back in January the move for Kouassi Eboue was almost over the line before word emerged from Russia about a move to Celtic.
News of Celtic’s apparent interest broke yesterday on the Romanian website Sport.ro and was picked up by Scottish sources.
After less than a year with Steuau it seems that Popescu’s value is about to rocket into the £25m range.
The evidence for this appears to be Celtic watching Steuau’s derby match against Dinamo at the weekend.
A play-maker seems to be the position that Brendan Rodgers is most interested in filling. Popescu has been likened by Becali to Frank Lampard, time will tell if Celtic fans will be able to give their thoughts on that comparison.
