Nine years ago today Craig Levein witnessed one of the most shocking refereeing performances ever seen in Scottish football.

With Rangers (IL) a nose in front of Celtic, despite two recent losses at Celtic Park, the pressure was on as Dundee United visited Ibrox in the final fixture before the epic UEFA Cup final visit to Manchester.

The SPL had already gerrymandered the fixture list to suit Walter Smith’s side with the final round of fixtures taking place on a Thursday night- ten days after the second last fixture.

Additionally Rangers trip to St Mirren, who had finished in the bottom six but were free from relegation, was the Ibrox club’s second last fixture- against players who had had their holiday arrangements torn up to accommodate Walter Smith’s side.

Even with all of those advantages the performance of McCurry was stunning as some incredible decisions went in favour of Rangers (IL) allowing them to take full points and head to Manchester in good heart.

The future Scotland manager was fined £5,000 by the SFA for his outburst but had no regrets.

After the disciplinary hearing he said: “I said what I honestly felt at the time. It was a poor performance and I’m still angry about it: I wasn’t going to go in and apologise about anything I said.”
