Roberts in the dark

Patrick Roberts is as much in the dark about his future as anyone else.

The treble winning winger signed off as a Celtic player at Hampden on Saturday to bring an end to 18 dramatic months.

Roberts witnessed a decaying Celtic side brought back to life by Brendan Rodgers and played a key role in delivering three domestic trophies as the hoops completed the domestic season unbeaten in 47 matches.

Celtic and Manchester City have had dialogue over the future of the 20-year-old with a number unknown factors still to be counted in.

Two years ago Jason Denayer was in a similar situation to Roberts but after leaving Celtic his career is no further forward with little chance of a starring role at the Etihad.

Roberts will have plenty of offers to think over but the player and his parent club know that the next 12 months will be critical in his development.

After picking up his Scottish Cup winners medal Roberts told The Sun: “If it is a goodbye it will be a tough goodbye, as this is a massive club.

Celtic took me on when I was only 19 and I will always appreciate that. To have come to a club like this is massive.

I’ve been given an opportunity to play in huge games, to win titles and trophies. It’s more than I could have asked for.

I’m not going to say anything about the future because people read into comments, but I don’t know if I’ll ever play for a team who can go a whole season unbeaten — who are invincible.

I think, when I look back on my career, that this will be THE highlight, my biggest compliment in the game.

It’s good to get that so young, although hopefully I have a big career ahead of me.”

Roberts won’t be back at Celtic for pre-season training or the early Champions League qualifiers but is clearly a player that Rodgers would love to be able to call on again next season.
