Brendan Rodgers believes that his treble chasers share a lot of the characteristics of the Lisbon Lions.

Next week sees the 50th anniversary of the greatest result in the history of the club with a title presentation coming this weekend and the final of the Scottish Cup on May 27.

It could be an exceptional week in the history of the club- the sort of milestone that Rodgers loves to be involved in.

As a kid in Ireland Rodgers grew up hearing about the glory of the lions while watching a new era of greats such as Paul McStay, Tommy Burns and Roy Aitken.

Three more wins this season will see Rodgers’ side take their place as the first ever Celtic side to go through a domestic season unbeaten with three trophies for their efforts.

Comparing his side with the most famous in the club’s history the Celtic boss told the club website: “It’s quite fitting really in terms of how the team has played, especially in conjunction with the celebrations of the Lisbon Lions, as that squad was about humility, creativity and togetherness – all the key ingredients that make up a team.

I will be very proud on the day – proud to stand there as a Celtic supporter in among the many thousands who will be there and to see the players and the supporters celebrate together, as that’s the strength of Celtic – when everyone has one vision and the club is one.”

He continued: “The exciting part is that it’s only the beginning. We hope we can continue to roll out what we are putting in place here. What we are putting in place here is a systematic approach to our work which will hopefully create a continuum of success.

I love working with them and some coaches can enjoy working with players but don’t enjoy watching their team – but I love watching my team. I love to see how they take things from the training field into the game and how they have coped with all the various different questions they have been posed this season – and to still see them working as intensely, while the focus, concentration and belief has been great.”

Celtic face Partick Thistle, Hearts and Aberdeen to complete their domestic campaign.
