Brendan Rodgers is hoping to give Kris Commons an emotional farewell.

The midfielder is out of contract at the end of the with his six and a half year Celtic career set to end.

The former Derby County man has scored 91 goals for the hoops and was one of the key members of Neil Lennon’s squad that set the club up on it’s current run of six consecutive titles.

Commons hasn’t played in any matches this season but Rodgers is hoping that the 33-year-old can manage one final appearance in a Celtic shirt.

He’s not fit,” the Irishman explained. “He just has to wait and see the response to the issues he’s had with his back.

The most important thing for him at the minute is getting fit. He was outside doing some jogging this week so we’ll see how it goes.

Yes, I’m sentimental but not over-sentimental. We’ll just wait and see.”

Rodgers added: “My job is to win games and we’re obviously looking to the future now, so there will be different players who’ll play over the next number of games.

You have to respect someone who’s played the game he has here. He had a great impact.

Unfortunately, this season the team has taken on a different dynamic but we’ve always talked openly and well.

He’s a good guy, I like him, and when he finishes playing he probably has a career in coaching. He’s been a fantastic servant for Celtic, so he’ll go with my respect.”

Commons went on a 28 day Emergency Loan to Hibs over Christmas and is expected to team up again with Lennon once he leaves Celtic.

It’s understood that there are offers in to play in the United States and China but with his family settled in Scotland the 33-year-old could be back at Celtic next season in a Hibs jersey.
