Rodgers: I appreciate what I have

Brendan Rodgers won’t be tempted away from Celtic to manage Arsenal.

The Irishman has made a massive impact managing the hoops which has brought him mentions as a possible successor to Arsene Wenger.

After two decades in charge of Arsenal a growing number of fans are looking for change in the dug out as their club slip out of contention for major honours.

A salary close to £10m/year and a massive transfer budget has obvious attractions but as he goes about the business of rebuilding Celtic Rodgers has no interest in speculation linking him with other clubs.

Asked by Chris Sutton what he would do if Arsenal were to come calling Rodgers said: “Chris you know football as well as me, I signed here for four years because I believe that I can impose my way of working here and accept the responsibility to take the club to what they want to achieve.

Maybe after one year the supporters get fed up with me.”

Sutton tried again, asking about getting his head turned and whether Rodgers would be here for 10-in-a-row.

The Celtic boss replied: “Time will tell. I’m optimistic but I’m also realistically optimistic. I’d love to be here for that period of time.

I looked at Martin, he was here for five seasons, Lenny was here for four. I looked at Martin’s time here and he’s gone down as one of the great legends of the club.

If Martin could stay here for five years it must have been a good place to be. This is my fifth job as a manager, I appreciate what I have now, maybe when you are younger you are in a hurry.

Hopefully I’m going to be coaching for another 20 years, there’s a special feeling here.”

He never said no to a possible move to Arsenal but it’ll take something pretty spectacular to take him away from what he admits has become his dream job.
