The Ibrox Stadium safety question

The safety mystery over Ibrox Stadium was raised again yesterday at the Craig Whyte Fraud Trial.

Safety concerns were relevant enough to form part of the Share Purchase Agreement with a sum of £1.7m required back in 2011.

As well as the liability for the wee tax case that Whyte inherited when he struck a deal with Murray he also became responsible for essential stadium repairs.

If £1.7m of essential repairs were required in 2011 the extent of the disrepair to the stadium six years later could be anything.

Award winning journalist Phil Mac Giolla Bhain has been attempting to get to the bottom of the matter but despite allowing 40,000 fans to visit on a fortnightly basis Glasgow City Council are refusing to comply with a Freedom of Information request covering correspondence relating to the Safety Certificate.

The Council does licence more Orange Order marches than their counterparts in Belfast.

A few coats of pain were applied in 2014 for the Commonwealth Games but no noticeable works have been carried out since Murray sold out.

Even Dave King acknowledged that maintenance work stopped more than a decade ago with three quarters of the stadium build in the early eighties. The main stand will soon be celebrating it’s centenary.

The Ibrox Safety Certificate is due for renewal in early July although the ground could be used on June 29 for a Europa League first round qualifier.
