Brendan Rodgers has admitted that he’d love to bring Patrick Roberts to Celtic on a permanent basis.

Yesterday it was announced that the on loan Manchester City kid would be staying at Celtic until the end of the season rather than travel to South Korea with England for the u-20 World Cup.

That decision will allow Roberts to play in the Scottish Cup Final against Aberdeen on May 27 but after today’s double against St Johnstone Rodgers hinted that Hampden may not be Roberts final appearance as a Celtic player.

He’s a player that we would love to have here permanently,” the Celtic boss stated in an interview on Radio Clyde. “We might just get the chance to do that.

It tells you everything about his enjoyment here and how he wants to be a part of hopefully creating history here. You don’t often get the chance to do that in your career.

I was pleased with his first goal, delighted with his second one. This is something that we’ve been saying to him, he creates goals for everyone else but he can add numbers to his game, through experience that will come.”

Roberts joined Celtic on loan from Manchester City in January 2016 with the 18 month deal running until the end of the season.

City made a down payment of £5m to sign him from Fulham with a further £6m due depending on certain clauses.

During this season’s Champions League campaign City allowed the winger to play against them with Roberts responding by scoring the opening goal in the 1-1 draw between the two clubs at the Etihad Stadium in December.

It’s uncertain what City intend doing with Roberts for next season but it seems certain that there will be an offer from Celtic to bring him back to Glasgow.
