Aberdeen’s Scottish Cup hopes suffered a chilling blow yesterday as a master plan from Derek McInnes backfired spectacularly.

Going into their final match of the u-17 season Aberdeen were three points clear of Celtic who still had three matches to play after the clash at the Dons’ Balgownie Training Ground.

Having beaten Celtic at Lennoxtown earlier in the season confidence was high among the home side with a win putting them six points clear with Celtic still to play Hamilton Accies twice before completing the season at Murray Park.

Hamilton still had a chance of winning the title having killed off the challenge from Sevco at the weekend.

In anticipation of a morale boosting win and to inspire the u17 side McInnes assembled his first team squad and coaching staff to watch the 12.30 showdown.

Celtic showed no mercy and pumped the young Dons 6-0!

A hat trick from Jack Aitchison led the round after Kristi Marku had opened the scoring, Stephen Welsh chipped in with his usual goal and Tom Caffrey completed the scoring.

Hamilton’s 1-1 draw at Hibs last night means that Celtic are the champions with three matches left to play.

With well over 100 goals scored from their 23 league fixtures the young hoops are miles ahead of Aberdeen on goal difference with the two clubs tied on points.

Celtic play their final home fixture on Friday night at home to Hamilton Accies at Lennoxtown.

CELTIC: McAdams; Duffy, Welsh, Deas, Church; Marku, McInroy; Campbell, Henderson, Diver; Aitchison
