Chalmers looking on the bright side

Joe Chalmers is one of many unemployed footballers this summer.

The defender was released by Motherwell at the end of the season after a two year stint at Fir Park.

Not so long ago he was part of an exciting young Celtic youth side- a team that won 4-2 away to Manchester City in the Next Gen Series and followed that up with a 2-0 win at home.

That side looked destined for greatness but like all youth teams their progress goes in different directions- some are flying ahead with others virtually out of football.

Filip Twardzik and Paul George have almost fallen out of the game, Jackson Irvine and Callum McGregor are making great progress while others like Chalmers, Marcus Fraser and John Herron are somewhere in-between.

As he waits for offers to come in for the next stage in his career Chalmers can take heart from the Australian that is one of the most wanted players in the Championship after stop offs at Kilmarnock and Ross County.

Jackson Irvine is one of my best friends and I take inspiration from how well he’s done since he left Celtic,” the 23-year-old told the Daily Record. “Now he’s excelling in the Championship with Burton.

You always have to look at these things and just hope you can be the next one. I still believe I can get to that level, that I can kick on and still do very well for myself.

Hopefully it’s a case of one door closing and another one opening.

Chalmers added: “Being told you aren’t wanted is something you need to use to motivate yourself. If you don’t do that it will affect you more.

I need to try to turn it into something positive. I need to try to find that extra couple of per cent and keep going. People talk about trying to prove people wrong but that’s not me. I just want to prove myself right.

I want to prove I can get to the level where I’ve always wanted to be and where I should be.”
