Cristian Gamboa has been named in the Costa Rica squad for the Gold Cup which runs from July 7 to 26 in the USA.

Costa Rica face Canada, Honduras and French Guiana in the group stage and will be expected to progress through to the knock out stage while Celtic start their competitive season with a Champions League qualifier on July 12.

Gamboa will miss Celtic’s return to pre-season training tomorrow and could be well down the pecking order behind Mikael Lustig and Anthony Ralston by the time he returns.

Brendan Rodgers is keen to give Ralston the chance to develop into Lustig’s deputy this season, knocking back offers to take the defender out on loan.

Ralston impressed during pre-season training last season with Rodgers confident that he is now ready for a run in the side.

Last season Gamboa played in 21 matches after joining Celtic in a £1m move from West Brom at the end of the summer transfer window.

If a similar offer was to be received then it’s likely that Gamboa will be on his way with Champions League qualifiers the most important part of Celtic’s season.
