Twenty years ago today Celtic made a very special signing- Henrik Larsson.

At that time Chris Sutton was scoring freely for Blackburn Rovers and probably never noticed the arrival of the Swede as Walter Smith dominated the Scottish headlines by bringing in Marco Negri, Lorenzo Amoroso, Sergio Porrini and Jonas Thern from Serie A.

Between them those four players didn’t make anything like the impact Larsson had on Scottish football.

Over the course of seven seasons Larsson scored 242 goals but that barely tells the story of a career that wound down with Barcelona and Manchester United.

Sutton arrived in 2000 to share some of Larsson’s greatest moments as Celtic went from strength to strength.

Their success forced a rethink of finances at Ibrox with the decision to introduce dual contracts leading to liquidation in 2012.

Today there are kids that never saw the King of Kings play for Celtic but who hold him in the same esteem as older fans regard the Lisbon Lions.

Every player in Martin O’Neill’s squad rated Larsson as the best player that they ever lined up alongside, a view shared by Ronaldo and hoops mad Leo Messi.
