Brendan’s departure lounge

|

Slowly and quietly in the background Brendan Rodgers has continued to filter out the squad that he inherited from Ronny Deila.

Over the last week Saidy Janko and Logan Bailly have moved on as the hoops boss brings the first team squad down to a more manageable level.

When he arrived at Celtic last summer the first team squad stretched to around 30 names with almost half of them capable of playing in midfield.

A number of players in the Development squad will go out on loan, against East Kilbride on Saturday Tommy McIntyre was able to make 11 substitutions with half a dozen players out injured.

Loan deals are already in place for Ryan Christie, Scott Allan and Jamie Lindsay with more expected but it’s the transfers out that will give Rodgers space to operate the squad the way that he would like.

Celtic seem well connected for moving players on and aren’t reliant on a former manager signing up his old signings in order to provide his successor with funds.

A lot of the deals will be conducted in the final week of the transfer window after the club’s Champions League hopes are decided.

Although the outgoing players aren’t likely to be involved in Champions League players like Emilio Izaguirre are priceless back ups especially if the autumn brings a relentless round of fixtures fitted around si huge European nights.

GARY MACKAY-STEVEN

Seemed certain to be on his way to Sheffield United at the end of last season but Aberdeen now seems a more likely destination.

There is something in his game that appeals to Rodgers but he doesn’t play with the same intensity as other wing options such as James Forrest, Jonny Hayes and Scott Sinclair.

At Aberdeen he could flourish like he did at Dundee United but he fell short of the standards and consistency expected of a Celtic player.

NIR BITTON

He slowly drifted out the picture as Rodgers’ side started to develop.

While he retains the ball well and can pick out a pass the new look Celtic side is about pace and penetration which the Israeli internationalist seems short on.

Playing on the continent would probably suit his game much more than a move to England, after four years at the club he has only really enjoyed one spell of top form with a number of other players pushing for a place in the side alongside Scott Brown.

NADIR CIFTCI

This one looks to be Rodgers biggest challenge.

Halfway through a four year contract Ciftci has had loan spells in Turkey and Poland without making any impact.

It’s hard to imagine where he can try net but perhaps Pierre van Hooijdonk can line up a club in Holland that can bring out the best in the striker.

There was something about him at Dundee United but with a short fuse discipline was always going to be a problem- now his relatively high Celtic salary will be the biggest obstacle to finding a new club.

CRISTIAN GAMBOA

He didn’t do much wrong last season but it seems that the rapid development of Anthony Ralston has caught the attention of Brendan Rodgers.

Gamboa was the perfect deputy for Mikael Lustig last season but Ralston is being prepared for a dozen or so appearances in the season ahead, more if circumstances change.

After failing to make any impact at West Brom a Championship side is his most likely destination with Celtic’s decision to allow him to play at the Gold Cup rather than be involved in pre-season training confirming his likely departure.
