Ryan Christie continued his bid to ensure Europa League group stage football at Pittodrie with the opening goal in the 2-1 win over Apollon Limassol.

The on loan Celt headed the Dons in front after four minutes with Andrew Shinnie scoring the winner after Jander Santana had equalised early in the second half.

Plenty of Celtic fans were thinking ‘what if’ when news of Christie’s goal came through 24 hours after the goal-less draw with Rosenborg.

The likelihood of Moussa Dembele and Leigh Griffiths both being out injured at the same time would have been remote when Brendan Rodgers got the offer to send Christie on loan for a season with the second best team in Scotland.

Christie scored for Aberdeen in their 1-1 second round draw against Siroki Brijeg then set up both goals in the return leg against the Bosnians.

Aberdeen have been knocked out at the third round stage in each of the last three seasons but now stand a fighting chance of going through to the play-off round.

Although the quality of opponent improves noticeably in the play-off round Everton’s 1-0 home win over MFK Ruzomberok showed that the bigger clubs can be caught cold.
