Brendan Rodgers could have found a secret striker- Callum McGregor.

The 24-year-old was played in the support striker role in today’s 5-0 win at Sunderland and helped himself to a hat-trick.

McGregor finished last season as one of Celtic’s best players but had to settle for a place on the bench against Rosenborg in midweek.

Right from the first whistle Celtic were on the front foot with McGregor picking up on a slack pass back to open the scoring in the fourth minute.

Eleven minutes later he timed his run perfectly to collect a pass from Scott Sinclair on the end of a great passing move then showed great composure to net from 15 yards out.

When Celtic were awarded a penalty just before the hour mark there was only one candidate for the job with McGregor tucking the ball home from 12 yards out.

Jonny Hayes and Stuart Armstrong scored the other goals but as his striking options are reduced Brendan Rodgers has another midfield options to consider for Rosenborg on Wednesday night.

At the Whitby Town Challenge Trophy a Celtic XI beat the hosts 2-0 with goals from Broque Watson and Aidan Nesbitt.
