Celtic seem certain to cash in on Virgil van Dijk’s transfer from Southampton.

The Dutch defender left Celtic two years ago in a £10m deal that included a sell on clause.

Although the exact detail remains a closely guarded secret a minimal 10% cut on any profit should see the hoops at least £5m better off.

Last month it seemed that van Dijk had decided to move to Liverpool but Southampton put a stop to that by threatening a Premier League enquiry into allegations of tapping up and their player visiting Jurgen Klopp at home.

Rather than take a transfer ban Liverpool backed down, apologised and ‘dropped’ their interest.

Over the last week van Dijk has opted out of Southampton’s pre-season trip to France with Chelsea rumoured to be interested in a £60m deal at the weekend.

Last night the chances of a move increased significantly as the famous words of ‘Sky Sports understands’ emerging.

According to Sky Sports News: “We understand Van Dijk still wants to move to Liverpool. He has not gone on a Southampton training camp in France.

There is no suggestion that Liverpool have done anything wrong since they apologised and ended their interest, while Southampton’s position remains that Van Dijk is not for sale.

Chelsea and Manchester City are also interested in the player.”

Liverpool haven’t signed any central defenders during the transfer window with the smart money suggesting that van Dijk will be at Anfield before the transfer window closes.
