Liverpool are prepared to be patient in order to sign Virgil van Dijk.

According to a report in the local Daily Echo Southampton’s new boss Mauricio Pellegrino is hoping to convince the defender to drop his transfer request.

Liverpool ‘dropped’ their interest in van Dijk after Southampton threatened to call in the Premier League to investigate allegations of tapping.

The Anfield club made a public statement dropping their interest but a month later they are still waiting to sign a central defender.

Van Dijk handed in a transfer request 10 days ago when he opted out of Southampton’s pre-season trip to France.

Manchester City and Chelsea have been quoted with an interest in van Dijk without getting to the stage of putting an offer on the table.

Southampton gave van Dijk an improved six year contract in May 2016 with Celtic waiting on the sidelines to collect their sell on fee for the defender that they sold for £10m in Auhust 2015.
