Henry McLeish has joined the campaign to bring accountability to Scottish football.

The former first minister produced an acclaimed review for the SFA in April 2010 but after shuffling a couple of committees the areas looking at transparency and accountability were gently swept aside.

Failure to apply Financial Fair Play and a proper Fit and Proper Person test led to the liquidation of Rangers in 2012 with the SFA and SPL/SPFL making it up as they go along since then.

McLeish was at Holyrood today for the official launch of the Scottish Football Supporters Association with a hard hitting campaign to review a decade of cheating from Rangers (IL).

In the press release the former First Minister said: “It is often said, and said for a reason, that football would be nothing without fans.

The game, and how it is delivered and consumed, has changed markedly in the past couple of decades yet little seems to have been done to involve those same people into how the game is managed and how decisions are made.”

Every club in the country suffered as the Ibrox club fuelled wage inflation, scooped up prize money and access to European competitions.

In a bid to remain competitive Dundee, Livingston and Motherwell all went into administration although they were able to secure CVAs in order to avoid the humiliation of liquidation.

While supporters of clubs from Ibrox are likely to view the campaign suspiciously they have been among those that have suffered most from the lack of governance.

Their own gullibility to welcome anyone up the marble staircase promising to ‘sort oot Selik’ has made life easy for a serious of dubious characters getting their hands on season ticket money.

Proper governance, transparency and FFP would have scared off many of the investors and given the clubs from an Ibrox the chance to grow in a sustainable fashion.
