Anthony Stokes has had his Blackburn Rovers contracted terminated one year into a four year deal.

Celtic released the striker 12 months ago but after an impressive loan spell with Hibs he was snapped up by former Blackburn boss Owen Coyle.

Stokes never played a game under Tony Mowbray with the former Celtic boss coming to an agreement to terminate his contract today.

In January Stokes was linked with a loan move to Hibs with a re-union with Neil Lennon again on the cards.

Lennon signed the one time Arsenal kid for Celtic in 2010 with the two men having an on-off relationship during four dramatic years in Glasgow’s east end that produced three league titles.

Since winning promotion Lennon has lost Jason Cummings, James Keatings and Grant Holt with Stokes an obvious replacement as the Edinburgh side gear up for their return to the top flight after three years in the Championship.
