Sutton’s warning for Armstrong

Chris Sutton has warned Stuart Armstrong not to jump at the first big money offer from England.

The former Dundee United midfielder is out of contract in less than a year with talks about a new contract stalling.

Brendan Rodgers has highlighted the role of the agent involved but it’s the player that employs the agent and not the other way around.

Armstrong’s career has been transformed over the last twelve months with both the player and the club benefiting, at the moment he is one of the lowest paid players in the Celtic first team.

A weekly wage of £50,000 and a seven figure signing on fee could be on offer from half a dozen English clubs but Sutton believes that another season or two working with Rodgers would be far more beneficial that instant riches.

Sometimes in football you should be grateful for what you’ve got, rather than looking for the next challenge too soon,” the former hoops striker states in the Daily Record.

I’ve got no doubt he could crack it in England but it’s a case of where.

It’s not much use getting swallowed up in a relegation battle in the Premier League when he could be improving in the Champions League.

There’s no doubt there is an awful lot of money to be made in England and it must be very tempting.

At the same time, I’d like to see him pen a new deal and show a bit of loyalty to the manager who has got him in to this position.”

Sutton added: “Cast your minds back 12 months ago and it was a completely different story.

Armstrong had flattered to deceive at Celtic and many wouldn’t have been surprised to see him go.

He didn’t make much of an impact in the first half of the season but he came to life in the second part of the campaign. That was down to the coaching from  Brendan Rodgers.

I’d like to see him recognise that by committing to the club for a bit longer. I can understand why Celtic are worried. He’s going in to the last year of his contract and could go for next to nothing in January or for free next summer.

They will want to know now so they can cash in but I don’t think it’d be right to move after performing for just six or seven months.”
