Celtic fans want to see an experienced defender brought in for their Champions League campaign.

Jozo Simunovic, Dedryck Boyata and Erik Sviatchenko were missing from the 4-3 defeat against Astana which put Nir Bitton and Kristoffer Ajer into the frontline.

Both players have looked capable while playing alongside a recognised defender but put together they had an uncomfortable night against the Kazakh champions.

Patrick Roberts is Celtic’s number one signing target but the reliance on Simunovic, who only played in two Champions League matches last season, has left supporters worried ahead of the group stage draw.

In a Video Celts poll yesterday that asked ‘Should Brendan sign a new experienced defender?’ there were 231 votes saying Yes with -13 voting No.

Rodgers has a week to strengthen his squad before the transfer window closes.

Steven Caulker of QPR and Manchester City’s Jason Denayer are the most obvious targets with Rodgers having to weigh up just how quickly a new defender could be introduced to the club.

Rivaldo Coetzee is on his way from Ajax Cape Town but pitching in an untested 20 year old South African would be a major risk.
