A petition has been launched to investigate the sectarian abuse of Neil Lennon.

The Irishman was demonised at the weekend when he led Hibs to victory at Ibrox with anti-Irish and personal directed at him from within Ibrox.

Shamefully most commentators and pundits have put it down to football rivalry and even traditional banter rather than identify and call out what was really involved.

Police Scotland were in attendance and took no direct action against fans yelling abuse at the Hibs manager.

After Monday morning newspapers announced that the Police and SFA were to investigate Lennon’s actions it was later reported that social media abuse and threats to the life of the Hibs manager would be investigated.

Incredibly Hibs, the SFA and the SPFL remained silent throughout Monday prompting one group of fans to launch a petition calling for an investigation and end to the campaign against Lennon.

The petition’s aim is to: “Open an investigation into the sectarian and personal abuse, both verbal and missiles, aimed at Neil Lennon before and during the Rangers v Hibs game on Saturday 12th August

Why is this important?

Neil Lennon should feel that he can manage his team at Ibrox without being subjected to personal, hate filled abuse, and not feel that he has to worry about being injured by objects thrown at him.”

With no sign of leadership anywhere across Scottish football it seems that the policy of ignoring and trying to move on is backfiring with important issues festering away.
