His smiling face and fondness for television adverts ensured that no Celtic fan will ever forget Cha Du Ri.

With Ki Sung Yeung already at the club Neil Lennon snapped up the South Korean internationalist on the back of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

As the son of Cha Bum’Kun he was born and brought up in Germany and arrived at Celtic after eight years experience in the Bundesliga.

During his first season there was plenty of drama and excitement with Cha smiling his way through it all and picking up a Scottish Cup winners medal as an unused substitute in the 3-0 win over Motherwell.

In season 2011/12 he made 22 appearances as the SPL title was won, along the way there was a bizarre own goal away to Rennes in the Europa League while he scored the other goal as Tony Watt grabbed a debut double in another 3-0 win over Motherwell.

With his Celtic deal completed he returned to Germany for a short stint with Fortuna Dusseldorf followed by two seasons at FC Seoul.

The defender seemed an unlikely coach but joined the South Korea national set up under Uli Stielike, resigned with the German and then was restored as Kim Nam-il took charge last month.

South Korea have a real battle on to qualify for the World Cup Finals in Russia which could break their qualifying run which stretches back to 1986.

With two matches left to play Iran have booked their finals place with South Korea a point ahead of Uzbekistan. The second placed side qualifies automatically but the two third placed sides in the Asian groups will play off to take part in a play-off against a country from another FIFA confederation.
