Saidy Janko is playing a key role in the surprise side that has muscled in at the top of Ligue 1.

The defender left Celtic during the summer for St Etienne with no mention of a transfer fee but under former Brighton boss Oscar Garcia ‘Les Verts’ are locked at the top of the table with Paris St Germain and Monaco.

St Etienne are the only team in the division that haven’t lost a goal with Janko playing every minute all three opening matches with a 3-0 win at home to Amiens on Saturday the latest of three victories.

Janko made his final Celtic appearance almost a year ago away to Hapoel Beer Sheva on a night that he’d rather forget.

After seeing Craig Gordon save from the spot after he had given away a penalty he scored a bizarre own goal at the start of the second half to leave the Israeli’s needing one more goal to qualify.

Kolo Toure somehow held the defence together, by the time the next match started Janko was sent on loan to Barnsley with Gordon watching the debut of Dorus de Vries from the substitute bench.

Janko’s spell at Barnsley was uneventful, marred by a three month absence through injury.

At the age of 21 e has Manchester United, Celtic and St Etienne on his CV, keeping up with PSG and Monaco would top anything else in his brief career.
