Twenty-two years ago today a brand new chapter kicked off for Celtic as they hosted Newcastle United in a pre-season friendly.

It wasn’t just any old pre-season kick-about however- it was the first ever match at the new look Celtic Park with Rod Stewart opening the 26,000 seater North Stand.

That structure had been the symbol of hope for Celtic fans throughout a difficult season at Hampden that ended with the Scottish Cup ending a six year trophy drought.

Halfway through the Hampden season Fergus McCann had succeeded with the biggest ever share issue in British football as fans ploughed in £10m to refinance the club and you can get all the latest investment and transfer news at SportNation.com.

The minimum investment was £520 which was more than double the price of the average season ticket at Hampden.

John Collins opened the scoring with a first half penalty but Les Ferdinand equalised shortly after the interval.

Newcastle were title contenders back then, but now the newly promoted Premier League team are 5,000/1 to win the title with SportNation.bet.

CELTIC: Marshall, Boyd, McKinlay, McNally, Mowbray, Grant, Vata (Donnelly), Van Hooydonk, Thom (Walker), Collins.
