D-Day for Roberts

It’s been rumbling in the background since the Scottish Cup Final- will Patrick Roberts return to Celtic?

The winger finished an 18 month loan spell in style as he completed his medal collection in Celtic’s 2-1 win over Derek McInnes’ side.

Roberts showed his commitment to Celtic by turning down the chance to play for England in the u-20 World Cup Finals in order to complete the season in Glasgow.

There is no doubting his feelings for the club but in the cold light of day he has to consider what is best for his career.

Today that decision seems to boil down to Celtic or Nice, two clubs that have until 11pm tonight to register any new signings for the Champions League play-off round.

Brendan Rodgers has spoken regularly about his wish to bring Roberts back, preferably on a permanent deal rather than on loan and there seems to be an offer on the table at The Etihad.

Putting the 20 year old into the Celtic side would provide a massive boost for the Astana ties but with or without Roberts Celtic should have enough to get through.

Having made their interest known, having had a bid accepted if Roberts doesn’t sign today it could be time for the club to move on and look at other options.

Similar talents are thin on the ground but the hoops have a substantial database bursting with options for every position at every price.

Seeing Roberts return to Celtic tonight would be the ultimate feel good factor but equally if it doesn’t happen today perhaps it’s time to thank him for the memories and move on.
