Twenty-two years ago today Celtic signed a loveable big brute from Falkirk- John Hughes.

It was the second Yogi to wear the hoops and at a late stage in his career he made the most of every minute.

A deal was completed on the eve of the return to Celtic Park with his move failing to match the clamour and excitement of Andreas Thom signing on.

In 42 appearances Yogi played his part in an exciting new team that had the punters flocking to Celtic Park after a season of misery at Hampden.

Pierre van Hooijdonk led the line alongside Thom and later Jorge Cadete while Paul McStay and John Collins produced magic in midfield.

In defence Hughes effectively replaced Tony Mowbray and teamed up alongside Tom Boyd or Malky Mackay.

Unfortunately there was no silverware to show for a season that included just one defeat- at home to Rangers (IL) less than 48 hours after playing Paris St Germain in the Cup Winners Cup.

That season Celtic played four Saturday matches after Thursday night duty in the Cup Winners Cup, if those games had been switched to a Sunday Hughes may have had a medal to show for his Celtic efforts.

After Celtic he signed for Hibs before completing his playing career at Ayr United.

As a manager he took charge of Falkirk, Hibs, Inverness Caley Thistle, Livingston, Hartlepool and Raith Rovers.
