Rob Kiernan is delighted to have escaped his Ibrox hell.

The former Republic of Ireland u-21 star dropped out the picture as soon as Pedro Caixinha took over from the Magic Hat and has been forced to train with the u-20 squad.

With Micky O’Halloran and Andy Halliday sent out on loan Caixinha has managed to whittle away at the in-house rebels with Kiernan pleased about joining Phil Brown’s League One outfit.

It’s been a little bit of a long process but it’s good to get it over the line and I’m looking forward to getting going,” he told the Southend website.

I’ve worked with Phil before and he’s been great to me. My loan got cut a bit short and I got recalled back to Wigan but it’s nice to link up again and hopefully I can do well for him.

I’m glad it’s all sorted and I can get ready for the season ahead.”

Kiernan has signed a three year contract and is hoping to make his debut against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.

Earlier in the summer he was linked with a £2m move to Fulham but today’s move was for an undisclosed fee in the region of £38,723 which will go straight into Caixinha’s transfer war-chest.

Southend have also been linked with a move for Harry Forrester but with two years left on his lucrative Ibrox deal that move is likely to take longer to complete.
