Aberdeen have released a statement concerning Gary Mackay-Steven.

The former Celtic winger was rescued from the River Kelvin in the early hours of Sunday morning and rushed to hospital suffering from hypothermia.

The statement read: “The club can confirm Gary Mackay-Steven was involved in an incident in the River Kelvin on Sunday morning.

“He was treated for hypothermia but is now at home and recovering well.

“On behalf of Gary, the club extends its thanks to the emergency services involved.

“The club will not be commenting further on the matter.”

Mackay-Steven was an unused substitute for Aberdeen in Saturday’s 4-3 win over Partick Thistle at Firhill.

Celtic signed the winger from Dundee United in February 2015 alongside Stuart Armstrong and scored within minutes of his debut, also against Partick Thistle at Firhill.

After making a big impression initially his first full season withered away disappointingly in common with most of his team-mates.

Last season he made a handful of appearances in Brendan Rodgers’ side before being sold to Aberdeen in the summer.

Since moving to Aberdeen GMS has started two out of four SPFL matches with the Dons currently top of the table with full points from four matches.
