Mick McCarthy has dismissed the fake news claiming that Ipswich Town paid £1m for Martyn Waghorn.

The chunky striker had a year left on his Sevco deal when he joined the Championship outfit on Monday with many outlets claiming that the Ibrox company had banked £1m on the deal.

Ipswich have one of the lowest budgets in The Championship with McCarthy forced to work at the bottom end of the transfer market.

McCarthy is one of the most experienced managers in the business and quickly set the record straight when he was questioned about the Waghorn fee after last night’s League Cup win at Luton Town.

It’s an absolute snip,” he boasted to the East Anglian Daily Times. “It’s not the million quid which has been reported, nowhere near that. It sounds good for the club and for Rangers I guess, but no. I’m thrilled we’ve got him.”

Waggers came off the bench in the 63rd minute of the win at Luton and managed to pick up a booking during his brief outing.

Mark Warburton, who used to work as a city trader, paid Wigan £200,000 to sign Waggers in 2015 and was rewarded with a flood of goals as Sevco romped to the SPFL Championship in 2016.

The step up in class to playing against full time opponents proved too much for the former England u-21 starlet with Ipswich believed to have paid around £175,000 as well as taking on Waggers current wages deal.
