Carl McHugh has hit out at Bobby Madden over the decisions that cost Motherwell three points against Sevco on Sunday.

The FIFA ranked official was at the centre of three second half penalty claims at Fir Park with two going against Motherwell and one for the visitors.

In the end a penalty from Graham Dorrans settled the issue with Motherwell emerging pointless from their efforts.

I didn’t think the penalty against us was a penalty in a million years,” he told The Sun.

If that’s a penalty you are going to get five or six of them in every game but the ref gave it.

I thought the claim we had when Elliot Frear’s cross hit Lee Hodson’s arm was a penalty.

That could have been given so it was very hard for us to take as well.

We had chances to get back into the game, and that’s the positives to be taken from the performance.

We expected that performance of ourselves, and we were disappointed we didn’t win the game but we don’t want to be saying: ‘We’ve played alright’, when we’ve ended up losing.

My feeling is we should have taken three points out of that game, let alone one. That’s the frustration for us.”

Like the players it is still early in the season for Madden but he was involved in a number of controversies last season.

The most famous incident last season was when he failed to award Celtic a last minute penalty against Sevco when Clint Hill chopped Leigh Griffiths as he prepared to shoot from 15 yards out.

After the match some pundits claimed that Madden couldn’t give a penalty because he didn’t have a clear view of the incident but television evidence seemed to suggest that he he said that Hill had played the ball.

Alan Muir will referee tonight’s Celtic v Kilmarnock League Cup tie assisted by Frank Connor. Along with Steven McLean they were the officials that missed Josh Meekings handball in the 2015 Scottish Cup semi-final between Celtic and Inverness Caley Thistle.
