Should Celtic go for Jason Denayer?

With a day and a half to go in the transfer window there seems a strong need for Celtic to bring in a central defender.

Paris St Germain are less than a fortnight away.

As things stand Dedryck Boyata and Erik Sviatchenko are both out injured although the Belgian should be back within a fortnight he has missed out on a full pre-season programme.

Celtic’s only game before facing Neymar and his pals is at Hamilton Accies, going on previous Jozo Simunovic won’t play on their artificial turf.

The relationship between central defenders and a goalkeeper is critical to the success of any team which brings us to a possible solution.

Jason Denayer.

Three seasons ago, as a teenager he breezed through life in the SPFL playing alongside Virgil van Dijk and in front of Craig Gordon.

Only Steven McLean denied that side the chance of a treble against Falkirk in the final of the Scottish Cup.

Since leaving Celtic it’s fair to say Denayer’s career hasn’t progressed as he would have wished.

After his loan season at Celtic the defender signed a new five year contract with Manchester City but his hopes of a breakthrough at the Etihad are over after unconvincing spells at Galatasaray and Sunderland.

Without doubt there is a player in Denayer but the question that Brendan Rodgers will be thinking about is how quickly can the damage of the last two seasons be cleared?

As Sunderland slipped to relegation last term the Belgian defender would have watched how the careers of Scott Sinclair and Moussa Dembele picked up, he’d also have noted how Rodgers rescued Boyata after a season of suffering under Ronny Deila.

A loan deal wouldn’t really be satisfactory but bringing Denayer in on a three year contract and working him back to the form of the 2014/15 season must be tempting to Brendan Rodgers.
