Paris Saint Germain do have a weakness- and it’s in goals according to Fabien Barthez.
The former French internationalist spent time at the Parc de Princes during a career that also featured spells at Manchester United and Monaco,
Kevin Trapp and Alphonse Areola have alternated so far this season with Unai Emery failing to spend the same sort of money or attention on his defence as h has to his star studded attack.
Areola played in Friday’s win away to Metz but it wouldn’t be a surprise if Trapp takes the field at Celtic Park.
“When you’re a keeper, the competition should be with yourself and not others,” Barthez explained to The Sun.
“Alphonse Areola is 24 years old and plays at a big club. He has been working with great players every single year and is learning.
“I’m not defending Areola, just the position of goalkeepers. For me, you can’t say there are two keepers. I’m against competition like that. The keeper doesn’t know what’s happening and struggles to progress.
“It never works and I know other keepers feel the same way. It weakens both the two keepers and the team. You also cannot build a meaningful understanding with your defenders if you keep changing the position.
“I have no preference between Areola and Trapp but PSG need to choose one or the other.”
PSG have started the French season with five straight wins and a goal difference of 19 for and just 3 against.
Despite that impressive start to the season the shadow of last season’s Champions League exit still hangs over the club.
A 4-0 home win over Barcelona should have paved the way for a place in the last eight of the competition but a 6-1 defeat in the Nou Camp spelled disaster for the French giants.
Trapp was the keeper that night with two goals from Neymar and another strike from Sergio Roberto after the 87th minute taking Barca through.
