Archie Knox can’t see any way of stopping Celtic.

When Walter Smith replaced Graeme Souness as manager of Rangers (IL) in April 91 Knox ended his five year relationship with Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford to assist Smith at Ibrox.

Manchester United then embarked on the most successful era in the club’s history.

Knox was side by side with Smith as they went on an incredible spending spree (funded by the Bank of Scotland) in a bid to win 10-in-a-row and return the European Cup to Glasgow.

The pain of Celtic’s domination cuts deep into that generation as they reflect on what Murray actually did at Ibrox although criticism of the man know simply as The Chairman is clearly out of bounds.

Asked if his old pal Fergie could halt the current Celtic side Knox told the Evening Times: “Unless you have the players and you recruit well or be lucky enough to have good players then you are not going to do it.

“For Rangers to get back to what they once were then they need to have the same level of player as Celtic. Celtic have better players – it is not rocket science

“There is no magic formula for it – you simply have to have better players who have better attitudes than the rest of the teams and then you have a good chance of winning.

“I don’t see anybody [knocking Celtic off their perch] in the near future.

“There is no question that Celtic can deliver at the moment. There is no question about that.

“The level of player that Brendan Rodgers is bringing, getting the likes of Patrick Roberts back and Kieran Tierney being a phenomenal player, Stuart Armstrong improving all the time and Leigh Griffiths scoring goals as he does, and having six players in the Scotland team, is great for Celtic.”

Knox was manager of Dundee in 1986 when two goals from Albert Kidd denied Hearts the title as Celtic celebrated clinching the championship with a 5-0 win over St Mirren at Love Street.
